the story of green spaces Albany
During our multiple-mile walks through downtown Albany, we began to notice a significant lack of trees and dedicated green spaces in the area. As we covered more ground, it became increasingly clear that there was a real need for more greenery, especially in the densely built-up parts of the city. This observation led us to conduct further research, which revealed a concerning trend: underserved areas, particularly in the winter, were even more devoid of trees and natural spaces.
Without the shade, beauty, and environmental benefits that trees provide, these neighborhoods were missing out on critical elements that contribute to both physical and mental well-being. Recognizing the importance of addressing this issue, we decided to take action and founded Green Spaces Albany. Our goal is to bring more trees and green areas into these parts of the city, working to create a healthier, more vibrant, and sustainable urban environment for all residents.
our goals
Downtown areas often lack sufficient trees and green spaces, leading to higher levels of pollution and reduced air quality. Urban environments lose approximately 36 million trees annually, and this absence of greenery has serious implications. Trees act as natural air filters, absorbing pollutants like carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, with a single mature tree capable of absorbing up to 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year. Without enough trees, downtown regions face increased pollution, higher temperatures, and health risks, including respiratory and cardiovascular issues. Underserved communities, frequently situated in these urban centers, are disproportionately affected by these environmental challenges. Initiatives like Green Spaces Albany aim to address this by planting more trees and creating green areas, improving air quality, reducing temperatures, and enhancing the overall quality of life for urban residents.
